LIF (Laser Induced Fluorescence) is a diagnostic technique for the hydrocarbon, aromatic poly-cycles and combustion processes.
The fluorosensor is based on fluorescence induced laser techniques.
Most of the above materials have absorption bands in the UV and emit fluorescence spectra in the range 250-400 nm. Measurements of the spectral distribution of the radiation, together with time resolved decay measurements, allow to get a fingerprint of the hydrocarbon material under test. Trough a proper and accurate calibration, semi-quantitative measurements are performed.
The LIF technique is also useful for detecting oil or chlorophyll on the sea.
