There has been a rapid growth in the use of endoscopy in gastroenterology over the last two years. This growth has stimulated the development and use of lasers in gastroenterology. The fibreoptically-delivered laser beam makes the use of lasers an ideal therapeutic adjunct to endoscopy, producing energy which is suitable for coagulation and vaporisation. Laser has four main applications in gastroenterology: palliation of malignant dysphagia; palliation of advanced colorectal carcinoma; treatment of upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage; and treatment of colorectal adenomas.
